Our Poppy Seed Story

Back in 1995, while attending Bumbershoot Music Festival at the Seattle Center, my husband Pat met a man from Poulsbo, WA named Blue Lou. They both loved jazz and while enjoying music at the festival, they discovered that they both had a love of gardening and growing beautiful flowers and they became fast friends. Blue Lou invited us to the farm he was living at and showed us the most beautiful flowers that were blooming in his garden, towering high with bright gorgeous pinks and purples and waving in the breeze. They were so beautiful and unique, that we fell in love with the poppy.

Blue Lou was kind enough to share some seeds with us and that next Spring, Pat planted them. He followed Blue Lou’s instructions for preparing the soil and they came up tall and beautiful!

During this time Pat was working with a website designer for a real estate website and hit upon the idea of creating a website where he could share the seeds for these beautiful flowers with the world. They created our first website at opiumpoppyseeds.com and began sharing these seeds all over the world!

Unfortunately, Pat died of a heart attack 28 days before his 50th birthday on April Fool’s day 2005, of all days. In his honor, his wife Julie has kept his dream alive of sharing these seeds with all. We no longer ship outside of the US, but we know there are seeds out there all over the world, growing tall and beautiful for Pat!
